Pedal 4 Possible Century Ride!
On September 14th I will be riding the 100 mile Pedal 4 Possible charity ride to benefit Craig Hospital in Denver, CO. Craig Hospital is a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital specializing in the treatment of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
Individuals come from all over the world to receive care at Craig Hospital. Craig has done tremendous research and has developed programs to help people with all levels of function to reach their full potential. I have seen firsthand how this world-class organization cares for individuals and their families/caregivers that have been impacted by SCI and TBI.
In 2007, I fell while unloading my bike from the back of my pick-up truck and suffered a T-4 incomplete spinal cord injury. I shattered three vertebrae and torqued my spinal cord (still makes me cringe!!). The injury required 8 hours of surgery and left me with partial paralysis and significant nerve damage below my rib cage. I had to learn how to walk again and required over a year of outpatient rehabilitation. With a great deal of support from family, friends, and incredible clinicians I was able to make a significant recovery. There is still some residual damage, but I’m happy to say it’s all the best it has ever been, and now I have another opportunity to ride 100 miles in order to help others recovering from similar injuries!
It’s taken a lot of time to get to this place, but I now consider myself very lucky, and probably for the first time since the injury very satisfied. We transferred my care to Craig 9 years post-injury. The amazing clinicians set me on a trajectory for success at a time when I thought there was nothing but tough times ahead. Craig Hospital provides programs and research-based guidance for patients AND their families. This includes living facilities for families of patients that may require months of inpatient care. The comprehensive approach is incredibly comforting and motivating at the same time.
Pedal 4 Possible is an incredible opportunity to help sustain these programs and provide rehabilitation opportunities for people that are in the same situation I went through 12 years ago. To honor the friends, family, and clinicians that have held me up all these years, and to support those that experience spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries every day I am going to give this ride everything I have…and I hope you will consider a donation to get behind the effort!
