We're Pedalin' for Pekala!
Almost a year ago, my father was involved in a serious bike accident while out on a ride in Salida. He was airlifted from Salida, CO to Denver where he spent two weeks in the ICU with a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The accident turned my family's world upside down. My mom, sister & I were fortunate enough to be able to be by my father's side, but those two weeks remain a blur because of the stress and emotions that come with the uncertainty of whether or not your dad is going to be ok.
Once my father was transferred to Craig Hospital for rehab, there was an immediate sigh of relief. I vividly remember meeting his entire care team within the first two hours of his arrival- his doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapist, psychologists, etc. It was evident we were in the right place- he had a team of people committed to not only his recovery, but getting him back on his bike and skis. Over the next month, our dad made incredible progress- which we attribute 100% to the compassion and dedication of his care team at Craig. Furthermore, the doctors and staff at Craig supported my mom, sister & I equally, which no doubt helped with our healing.
I’m riding in Craig’s Pedal 4 Possible because I want to support the work that happens at Craig Hospital for Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury patients. They gave me my dad back- and true to Pekala form, he’s back on skis and riding his bike. Pedal 4 Possible is a fundraiser for their Therapeutic Rec department, which of course I believe strongly in- it supports things like music therapy and outdoor recreation outings like kayaking or visits to State Parks.
Due to the dedication and hard work put in by my dad and the staff at Craig, my dad will also be riding in Pedal 4 Possible. I am incredibly grateful that we as a family will be able to participate and show our thanks to the folks that provide miracles on a daily basis.
If you have the ability to donate to a program that has touched our lives, we would so appreciate it.
