She's Still Exceptional
A funny anecdote from my wife's recovery after 2 life-threatening TBIs: while still in the neuro-ICU at St. Anthony's after her first cycling accident 5 years ago, and still quite impaired - not oriented at all, but verbal - Sarah began tugging on her EKG lines. My brother was there, and told her not to do that, to which she replied "Exception to the Rule." It's been a running joke in our family since.
Fast forward to fall 2018, when Sarah sadly suffered yet another delibitating injury on her bicycle, and landed again at Craig. Now that she's fought her way back to being able to walk and talk, we got her a T-shirt emblazened wth "Still Exceptional 2018".
I like to say that my wife is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet on the outside, and a total bad ass on the inside. We ride to celebrate her love of life, unstoppable tenacity and fierce determination, but above all her overriding humanity through it all. She is truly exceptional in all the best ways.
Over the weekend, we did something we haven't done since Sarah's latest accident - we rode in a fundraiser. This time for Craig Hospital. Sarah was able to volunteer, Alex, Wiebke, our "German daughter", Glenn, Sarah's brother-in-law, and I rode the course.
We had a great day, the weather was perfect, and the ride went really well. We hope that you might contribute to Craig's on-going efforts to help patients in ways not covered by insurance - their numerous programs to re-integrate patients into the community, for example, or to help people like Sarah reconnect with their passions, whatever they may be.
Every little bit helps. Thank you for all that you do to support us and this important work.
